trainAR
trainAR is an innovative training, recovery, and health app powered with augmented reality to enhance the fitness experience. This app design and process was created for my Masters program capstone course.
About trainAR ๐ช๐ป
trainAR is an AR fitness application where you practice all your home workouts, and recommended exercises as per user fitness goals along with a personal trainer all 3 in a single application. View the backstory of IBMโs international fitness company case study here.
Market Gap ๐งฉ
Currently, many videos show how to do the exercise, but there are no apps that provide the AR environment regarding the same. It helps you to view the entire exercise in a real environment. The trainer in the app will be of the same height. The exercises will be curated, and scheduled depending upon the various factors like equipment, number of days of workout, etc.
Target Audience ๐ฅ
Individuals who are unable to have access to gyms due to time, accessibility or whopping gym subscriptions are our potential users. People who cannot afford personal trainers or have basic fitness as their end goal are also our targeted users.
Product Potential ๐ฅ
From the gym ownerโs perspective, it is quite costly to afford gyms, trainers, equipment, electricity bills, etc. w.r.t. to the low purchasing power of the members.
Perfect time to go digital ๐
So currently pandemics and work-from-home culture have made life quite lethargic and dull. 3 out of 5 people are not able to take care of their health and hygiene.
Every individual will think twice before going to the gym for working out with the fear of not getting any coronavirus symptoms. Those who are working out are still unaware of their workout schedule as well as the correct form of exercise and where one should feel exact pain while exercising. This app will help both of these categories of people.
Everyone does not intend to spend money on health and fitness as this is not considered a necessity, it is considered as a liability. But one can pay the reduced subscription depending upon his physique.
โโโโโโโGoing digital will help us cut down these prices to affordable ones. Where in a city like New York City one used to pay nothing less than $828 annually. By going digital we can provide a far lower cost than that.
Research Procedure ๐
Visit the fitness apps that I have downloaded and search for more fitness apps to do the comparison.
Choose one fitness app that I like the most and would like to help them to improve and make it better.
Craft suitable interview questions based on my experience with those apps.
Find suitable interviewees and schedule a session with them.
Refine and construct the interview question flows based on lecturer feedback.
Test the interview questions with a friend, so that I can improve myself and I will not be that stutter during that day.
We proceed to user interviews and get useful responses from interviewees.
I fill up the Google Forms based on the recording and feedback that I got from the interviewees.
User Research ๐
We have collected surveys from various sources:
Instagram Polls as well, keeping the Google Forms form as our main source of data gathering process.
During the survey and 1โ1 conversations with more than 15 individuals, we came across some insights which helped us understand the product better.
Data and findings ๐ฌ

Product Journey ๐ฃ๏ธ
Sketches โ๏ธ
Design
Low fidelity
The wireframes were created by using Sketch. I did a simple layout design for my first wireframe prototype.
High fidelity
Overall Feedback:
The image on Sign In/Up screens seems to have a different color mood compared to the Onboarding screens.
Assessment screens are boring, try to implement some interesting interaction to them.
The line at the background of onboarding is nice, try to implement it into the whole app, make it into a concept for the app.

Future opportunity ๐ฎ
With machine learning algorithms (object recognition) and a few sensors, we can develop a product (a scanner) that can detect the motions of the body while exercising and guide him/her with the help of text output.โโโโโโโ
โโโโโโโThere are a few more constraints regarding lighting, cost of implementation, full-body detection, etc. which are not put into practice to date.
