Problem
Every employee saw the same catalog.
The learning home was a course catalog — good if you knew what you were looking for, useless if you didn't. Completion rates for self-directed learners were flat.
IBM wanted a home that felt like it knew who you were and what you were mid-way through.
Process
Personalization that earns its slot.
01 · Continued-path first
'Continue where you left off' anchors the top of the page — the highest-signal recommendation is always the thing already in progress.
02 · Role-aware suggestions
Recommendations pull from role, team, and stated goals. Each recommendation shows why it's suggested — no black boxes.
03 · Featured, not filler
One featured hero course per week, curated by L&D. Nothing algorithmic dresses itself up as editorial.
Results
More completions, more engagement, less catalog scrolling.
+37%
course completions
2.1×
return visits per week
−48%
time to first meaningful action
Completions rose meaningfully quarter-over-quarter, and the 'return visits per week' metric doubled — the surface stopped being a destination for search and started being a place people came back to.
